Where Is Everybody? It’s That Time of Year Again…

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’

Matthew 28:19-20

Checking in…

It’s that time of year, dear Pilgrims, when we need a reminder that there is a LOT going on–outside Pilgrim Church. I know you like your church better when it’s full of families (you tell me so all the time) but the truth is, our members are loved in many other parts of their lives.

Their sports teams love them, their scout troops love them, their extended families love them, and so do a host of other programs and opportunities from May through June.

Eventually, things will settle down again (relatively) and we’ll se more of them. But right now? Trust me, they are flat out!

But while they’re away, I need to remind you of the two most important things you don’t need to do in relation to this annual “crisis.”

Number One: DON”T PANIC

It’s okay.

Most Pilgrims attend church a couple times a month. A few of us are here three times a month. Even fewer are here every week. So when special events come up, folks have even fewer open Sundays then they have in less busy months.

So remember what I say when someone tells me, “I really need to get back to church.” I say: “You’re always welcome at Pilgrim.” That’s it! We know you’re busy, God loves you, and we’ll see you when we can. Now, on to the second most important thing not to do.

Number Two: Don’t say, “We haven’t seen you in a long time.”

Sometimes, that can sound judgy. Sometimes, it is! There are times when people already feel bad for not being around. Churches have enough of a reputation around guilt. Let’s not add to it. Instead, try a simple, “It’s great to see you.” Or even, “I’m glad you’re here.” And keep them in prayer, always.

God loves us when we’re busy. God loves us when we’re away. And God loves us when we have all the time to attend church week after week. Let’s keep being a place people enjoy coming back to, rather than becoming one they dread.

Jesus told the disciples “I am with you always.” He knew they’d be thinking of him forever. And many Pilgrims go away and think of you often while they do. I look forward to seeing you each when I do, and I’ll mean it when I say, “I’m glad you’re here.”
