Have you ever been curious as to exactly what committees of Pilgrim Church do? We will be publishing information here over the next few weeks of various committees. If you’d be interested in learning more and perhaps even be willing to serve, we hope these descriptions will be helpful. This week’s featured committee is Buildings & Grounds.
Buildings & Grounds Committee
Buildings and Grounds (B&G) is currently composed of three members, and each person is elected annually for a term of three years. They oversee the care, custody, and management of the church property and supplies. They have the authority to make all routine repairs, additions, and alterations to the church buildings (keeping costs within the annual budget). The chair of B&G can expect to spend 10-20 hours a month on B&G tasks.
They prepare and execute all routine contracts for the upkeep and use of our church and other church property. They oversee the work of the custodian. They research and formulate capital improvement plans when necessary. However, they have no power to buy, sell, mortgage, lease or transfer real property without specific authority given by a two-thirds vote of those present and voting at an official (duly called) church meeting.
B&G meetings are monthly with more when needed. They organize spring and fall cleanups of the church property. In November they present an annual budget for the following year to the church council for review.
B&G is a terrific opportunity for people with good common sense who are willing to get their hands dirty and who enjoy working with others. One important thing to note: many vendors come to church early to do work, and B&G needs someone to let them in. Having a committee member who is either retired or who has flexible hours is a big benefit. Thanks for considering this impactful ministry!
