Do you go go go so you can rest rest rest?
Or do you rest rest rest so you can go go go? Either way, the message from Jesus is clear: you don’t get one without the other, and both are very important.
Jesus rests a lot–or at least makes of point of trying to rest. One of my favorite times is in John 4. Jesus meets the Samaritan woman, but the passage starts with him seeking rest:
Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon.
John 4:6 (NRSV)
He doesn’t always find rest, but the point is that he tries!
His intention is clear. Being out in the hot sun all day, preaching, teaching and healing is hard work. And of course, the bulk of his ministry seems to have happened in just three years.
The ministry of the church–including Pilgrim–has been running for thousands of years. So it’s good have breaks from teaching, from community events, from missions work; so we can return with power from September through May.
Enjoy your rest over this summer, so we can return with greater vigor in the fall.
Jesus rested, and so should you, whenever you can. If you find yourself in town (or on line via Facebook) feel free to swing by and see us at 9:30 Sunday mornings. Otherwise, safe travels, and we look forward to seeing you in September!
