God will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away.
Revelation 21:4
It was a privilege to attend our Annual All Saints Sunday Pilgrimage with St. Mark’s Church.
Each year, we read the names of those who’ve passed in the past year. Cindy rings the bell after each name. Of course, names are only the start of the story. At Pilgrim Church, we had five to share: Cindy Hanson, Paul Renfrew, Shari Sanford, Nancy Shoucair and Jed Watters. The choir shared a lovely rendition of Amazing Grace from the church steps in honor of the saints.
I loved walking behind the pipes and the cross and the candles, sharing our witness with Southborough. On the walk, we marveled at crystal blue skies, crisp air, and more acorns than we’ve ever seen.
My thoughts were wandering, though, back to my friends, my saints. I miss them all. And each of them influenced me in different ways. The term influencer has become a bit of a joke these days. I like these saints and what they’ve taught me.
Lessons Learned
Cindy Hanson always reminded me that love is a happy dog in your lap, looking up at you with love. I enjoyed sitting on her back porch and visiting. She asked about you all so often.
Paul Renfrew reminded me that hospitality is a treasure, and he always made me feel welcome at his side. He hosted so many Habitat trips! We welcomed me whether I remembered his favorite McDonald’s strawberry milkshake or not.
Shari Sanford reminded me that we should never stop caring, constantly inquiring about my Dad and others in my world. Her commitments to family, friends and congregants are inspiring.
Nancy Shoucair reminded me to take time to visit and to treasure other people. Remember to tell them what they mean to you whenever you can. She helped me see that we can worry all we like, but that God journeys with us through it all.
Jed Watters reminded me to keep learning! His intellectual curiosity never let up. He also taught me that we don’t have to agree with everyone on everything. Our friends can disagree with us without losing us as friends. He also reminded me that play is important. I loved gaming with Jed, and seeing at his trains.
I miss them each and all. These few words don’t sum them up…but maybe they spark your own memories. We will share their lessons with many others.
What have your saints taught you?
Consider their lessons today! Remember that they were with you, they are with you, and they will always be with you. Especially when you’re feeling the pain of missing them. I’m grateful for our All Saints traditions. I look forward to the pilgrimage next year, November 2, 2025, at 9:30 am in the Garden behind St. Mark’s Church.
My saints have also taught me it’s never too early to remind folks about something important. I’ll see you there!
