Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence but much more now in my absence, work on your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
Philippians 2:12-13 (NRSVUE)
Do you ever just need a scripture to focus on? Did you know that there’s a site for that?
Every day, the Revised Common Lectionary offers up three passages for folks to peruse. If you don’t know where to find out what they are, check out this page at Vanderbilt University! It will take you to a site where they list every single day of the year with three readings to consider for that day. For instance, today, January 27th, 2026, it lists Psalm 27:7-14, Judges 6:11-24, and Philippians 2:12-18. You get a Psalm, and Old Testament passage, and a New Testament passage.
The New Testament readings rotate between gospels and epistles. The Old Testament readings are from a wide range of books in that part of our Bible. There’s usually something for whatever you’re thinking about that day. When you click on the readings for that day, it takes you to another site called Bible Gateway. Here’s what the readings look like for this day in the New Revised Standard Version, Updated Edition. If you don’t like that version, you can choose another from the dropdown menu on the upper right.
You may notice that Sundays look a little different…
That’s by design. On Sundays, the lectionary offers up FOUR readings: one from the Old Testament, one from Psalms, then one each from the Epistles and the Gospels. Sundays are a little extra, as you know. They also offer up artworks that coincide with the Sunday scriptures. Here’s what that looks like for this Sunday, February 1st. There’s also other resources like Hymns and Slideshows and Prayers.
A lot of this is geared towards those who are crafting worship, but that doesn’t mean you can’t see it and gain inspiration from it as well. As we’re hunkered down in the snow right now, stuck watching the news (or other non-life-affirming exercises) it’s important to seek out our inspiration.
And if you’d like to dig into scripture even more, join us at 8:45 am in the Pilgrim Church Parlor for Bible Conversations, an informal discussion about the day’s scriptures!
