From this one breath,/ By as many heartbeats/ As my clenched fingers,/ Make one inch of song.
David Wagoner, “Prayer,” 1972
Sometimes we get so caught up in what we should be doing, we forget what we could be doing
Prayer is a cornerstone action for Christians, and you deserve a prayer break today! Take some time to center yourself. Spend a moment or an hour, connecting with God in whatever way you need most.
Anne Lamott once said there are only two prayers:
- Help me help me help me
- Thank you thank you thank you
Whether you agree with her or not, I’d add that both of them also include two other dimensions; because when you pray to God, you’re also saying something radical: I love you, and I trust you. Those are two concepts we don’t hear a lot about in 2026. We hear how people have been hurt by people who claim to love God. We hear how the world is going to heck in a hand basket. We hear about the way people don’t love and the way they don’t trust.
But there’s still a lot of love in the world…and it’s here for you!
Take a moment today, using The Lord’s Prayer, or find words of your own. Enjoy the benefits of a slow-down in heart rate and a pervading sense of calm. Enjoy the benefits of knowing you are known. And leave aside the freight that everyone else seems to want to add to your day, at least for one sweet moment.
